About a year ago, I needed to find a pet sitter. My husband and I were going to be away for the entire day, and we were not able to take our beloved dog with us. I knew that I could not leave her alone in the house for 18 hours. I started a search to find a reputable and reliable dog sitter who could be trusted to come into my home, walk my dog, feed her, and spend a little time with her.
I started my search on the internet looking for a “pet sitter” or “dog walker” that was in my area. A lot of names and companies were found. But I found that MANY of them did not have a website. I had two ways to contact them. I could call them or send them an email (to their Yahoo or Hotmail or Gmail addresses which to me does not project a quality business image). I am a computer person. I like to do my research online. I do not like to call people, leave messages, play phone tag, etc. I want to find the information on the internet – preferably on a website.
In the case of the pet sitter, I had specific questions that I wanted answers to before I called. I wanted to know the following:
- How long have you been in business?
- Are you bonded and/or insured?
- What services do you offer?
- What are the rates for the services I need?
- Where are you located?
- What would a visit to my home entail?
- What experience do you have?
Ideally I would have liked to see an online brochure that I could download and print out for my reference. I need the visual aspect of a business. Of course, I also needed to be able to speak the pet sitter and meet with him/her before I committed to letting someone in my home. Yet I wanted initial information before I started calling people.
Of all of the sitters that serviced my area, I only found one who had a website listed. Unfortunately for him/her, when I clicked on it, I received a dreaded “Page Was Not Found” error message. I moved on to the next person. My thought being that if this business didn’t even know that the website was not working, how would he/she be with my home or my beloved dog?
I was not successful finding a pet sitter with a website, so I finally broke down, and I called a couple of people in my area. Sadly, several never called me back, one was attending an event out of town and would not be around on the day that she was need, and a couple did not meet my criteria.
I did find a sitter. She was very nice, and she met my needs. It turned out that she did have a website, but it was “Under Construction”. When I asked her about it, she said it was being worked on and would be completed soon. She did end up caring for my dog, and I would definitely recommend her, as she was a wonderful person. Her love for animals was very apparent, and my dog just loved her.
However, a year later, her website is still “Under Construction”. I began to think that her business could be so much more successful if she had a website and marketing materials (like a brochure).
It was then that I realized that I wanted to help the pet focused business even if that company was just starting out or had been in business a while.
